Each year we accept a limited number of models for our modeling program. It allows us to try out new backgrounds, sets, locations, new ideas and build up our portfolio for the upcoming senior season.

Please join us March 19th for a Lengths of Love Party. All the details can be found in the poster below. You will need to call Glamour on Mane to schedule an appointment for this event (tell them it's for the Locks of Love event) There is a minimum hair donation of 10".

I (KCook Photography) will be there for a complimentary before and after session (you will recieve a 1-4x5 file of a before and after pose) This is one of those special moments for the memory book, especially if you daughter has never had her haircut before or she's been growing it out for a while.

Please plan on attending and Please pass this on to your friends. We are only as successful as the people who participate!

Glamour Portraits

I've been working on a new side to my portrait business. It's still portraits. I've been working on putting together classy boudoir portraits in a new site called "A touch of Sass" Apparently, this is an unknown area for Miami County or ladies are deciding it's trashy. I don't know. I do know, it's not about having the perfect size 3 (I'm sure not) or looking like you spend all your time in the gym (as a sole business owner and mom of 3 still at home, I sure don't have time for that!) It is about feeling confident in who you are, not what the media tells us we should be. As I have woman come up and tell me they picked up a post card (those cost me money to have printed, btw) they are telling me, I'm just not there yet. You're not where? Please, lets face reality, curves photograph better than angles. In the studio, the posing I use creates soft lines and pleasing angles (angles, not points). Now, I'm not bad mouthing anyone who looks like she spends 24/7 in the gym, but I'm not a sports photographer, I'm a portrait photographer. So, I have decided to go on a mission....Get ready for "Operation Beautiful You" It's for us woman who are moms, wives, job holders, PTO members, master of all and everything to our families. How many Portraits are there of YOU in your home? Not snapshots, I mean "Wow, I had a blast doing that" Portraits?

This is a mission, it's going take an army. If you are interested in joining, I am looking for ladies who would love to model for me....boudoir if you wish, glamour if that's you, or just a "knock your socks off" portrait session. These sessions are FREE for now.

I also need woman who are focused on making woman feel good about themselves, this may be party type consultants, professionals, boutique business owners. If you know one, are one and are ready to build a new market relationship, I need you too!

Two things have to happen for a print to qualify for decorating your home. It has to be printed and it has to be the right size for the space it's hanging. To banish the myth that an 8x10 is BIG, here's 3 examples of framed prints over an average size, if not very trendy, sofa. And not one of them is an 8x10! That 11x14 looks awfully tiny, I would hate to see an 8x10!

I thought I would share another session for the NILMDTS Charity Model search. 100% of each vote goes to the organization. The to 50 children with the most votes and the top 50 children with the most points go on as semi-finalists. The grand prize winner gets $5000 in prizes with a 2nd and 3rd place winner recieive $500 in prizes.

I'm not going to lie to you! I want one of my entries to win. Why? They're adorable children and for the photographer of the winning child there is also a prize package. In the past it has been a new camera, new studio, things that cost me a LOT! As I move into my 6th year of business and 25th year as a photographer, a lot of my equipment is dated and just falling apart. But with the lovely economy we have, and the misunderstanding about what a professional photographer actually does, I'm not realistically in a position to update or buy new (used) equipment. So sure, I want one of my entered children to win! I want them to get that prize package! And I want the photographers prize package!!

I usually share on Facebook, but since not every person out there is a Facebook groupie, I try to remember to post on my blog...which I throughly enjoy and should do more often! As we move towards the end of February, I find that the slow down is slowly ending and I have a few from the last couple months to share. Grocery Day {Piqua Ohio Photographer}

Good Morning! It's Saturday...that's my grocery day if I don't get there during the week, and I usually don't. With the lovely weather we've had, I get to go in the morning instead of the afternoon. My favorite store to shop at is Aldi. And let me tell you, we eat very well. A family of 5 at home usually runs around $125 a week, that includes paper products, cat food, cat litter, pop and lunch food. I refuse to pay $30 a week on lunches at the school. Of course with the price of food going up so much, I've changed the way I shop, by trying to stretch what I buy out two weeks.

Since I am always looking online for menus for the week, I thought I'd share my menu this week. I'd say 90% of the menu will come from Aldi. I had meat in the freezer, bought a large bag of cat food yesterday at the dollar store and a large tub of litter at Sam's club 2 weeks ago. I do not like shopping at Sam's club....it's expensive. But, if you have someone who can split things like flour, sugar, bbq sauce, etc, I'd say it would be well worth it!

Week of Feb 6th Menu

Meal #1 (Super Bowl and Carry In)

I get to cheat with this meal. We hav a carry in at church so I don't fix dinner on this day. It's also Super Bowl. I will be making Buzzard Puke (nacho dip) "Velveeta" cheese, hamburger, salsa, olives all from Aldi

Meal #2
Pork Roast (I had bought this on sale at Walmart a couple weeks ago, that means less than $2 a lb)
Mashed Potatoes (probably instant, but I have the real thing on hand)
Green beans, (yuk, but my husband loves them)
Salad (Aldi's bagged salad, you've probably getting served it at the restraunts you eat at!)

Meal #3 (This is my fast food meal)
Hamburgers (Meat from Downtown Market Place last week. $219/lb, meat went up, it's not the best deal)
buns (from Aunt Millies...59 cents)
French Fries (Sam's club bulk buy...they freeze great and we'll eat them quickly)
Lettuce, Tomatoes, Cheese (bulk from Sam's club, breaks down and freezes great)

Meal #4
Tacos
I usually make my tortilla shells becuase they are so much better than store bought. But this time I want crunchy
Lettuce, shredded Cheese (bulk, broke down and froze from Sam's club), tomatoes, sour cream
Mexican corn (frozen corn, Aldi and salsa (from my garden)

Meal #5
Stir Fry (all indgredients from Aldi)
Frozen Chicken breasts from Aldi cut into strips
Stir fry veggies (peppers, mushrooms, onions, carrots)
Terriakki sauce
Rice

Meal #6
Chicken Corn Chowder
This is an Aldi exlcusive meal from a cookbook I picked up there a couple years ago.

Meal #7
Brats
Mac and Cheese (the boxed kind, kids like it best)
carrots.

I try to stick the veggies in the meal, or serve salads, my kids handle them better that way!

Is it a healthy menu? Not entirely. Does it feed a family of 5 for under $100..you betcha! Do I exercise daily? You better believe it...if my kids and husband won't eat it, I might have well thrown that money down the disposal.

Cook earned this designation after meeting rigorous requirements measuring her artistic and technical competence. The Professional Photographic Certification Commission currently recognizes fewer than 2,000 Professional Photographers.

The Professional Photographic Certification Commission is the leading body for certifying imaging professionals. Certified Professional Photographers must complete a written examination, and evaluation, and adhere to a stringent code of conduct. It's a little harder in the house with a lens that is not made for low light...and at 4pm on a cloudy day, it's very very low light. This is where i push myself and the camera. It's how I learn. Local photographer, Kelly Cook of Kcook Photography, is participating in the 2011 International Charity Model Search to select North America’s Cutest Kid and to raise funds for the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation (NILMDTS.org). The last two years featured over 2,600 model’s images and raised $184,775 for the NILMDTS organization.

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS), is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization committed to assisting parents and families who experience the tragedy of an early infant loss. NILMDTS connects families with volunteer photographers and provides them with a professional portrait session and reproducible CD of the images of their baby at no cost to the family. For further information on NILMDTS, visit their website at www.nowilaymedowntosleep.org.

Participating photographers submit portraits of local kids to an international online voting gallery. Parents let friends and family know about the event and encourage them to vote for their child. Each vote is $1, and all proceeds from votes benefit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS.org). Finalists are determined by online votes, and all finalists move to an independent judging round.

The grand prize international winner will be determined from the 50 regional finalists. The winners are selected from the finalists by photography industry experts. The winning child receives a $2500 savings bond, a $2500 travel package, and a $100 Target gift card. The second and third place runners up each receive $500 savings bonds, and a $100 Target gift card. Winning photographers also receive valuable prize packages.

Sandy Puc's, Charity Model Search creator and sponsor, has long believed charitable work is the backbone of the community. She created this fundraising contest to highlight excellence in the portrait photography industry as well as raise funds for NILMDTS, the organization she co-founded in 2005.

Our Cutest Kids Facebook contest has turned into a wow contest. I expected 10 entries, we have over 40!! This was a very pleasant surprise!

Because of the awesome response, we decided we needed to go a bit farther with a second contest. Here are the rules:

Call to schedule your child for a Model Search session before January 31st and pay your $49 session fee that includes your entry for the North America's Cutest Kid contest. (this is waaay below our normal session fee, but it supports a very important cause)

That's it!

One name will be drawn from all the model sessions.

The Prize!

We will refund your $49 session fee and you will receive an Handmade accordion photo book. A total value of $125. (These are precious)

The book is ready to be filled with your favorite session images or holiday snapshots.

I'm just not a winter person. Give me a warm fire and a big picture window to a gorgeous view and I'm all set. Just don't make me go out in it! So I'm missing a few days and when you do 1 picture a day, you just can't go back!

Hopefully today's beautiful pictures will make up for that. From church this morning. We did manage to get up and out for that, came home around 4 to no electricity and to a cold house. Really would love to have that picture window and fireplace of my dreams!

I forgot to post yesterday. Acutally, I don't have an image from yesterday. I had seminars that took up part of my day. Ok, enough excuses. I did get a beautiful new background right when my daughters were getting home from school. My middle loved it and was willing to model for me. I can see so many ways to use it, and can't wait for the chance to do just that!

Day 4. I have to admit, I missed out on a great shot this morning because I didn't leave early enough on my way to a 9:45 appt. Nothing else caught my attention until after dinner when my daughter was reading. The light from the fluorescent bulb photographs an interesting color. Warm, but not like a household tungsten.

I worked so much on marketing today, I didn't get out of the studio. It happens, especially this time of the year. So back out into my yard to see what caught my attention. The neighbors barn looked like it had possiblities. The exposure was good, it just didn't give me any emotional feedback, so a little mood was added to the final picture.

I decided not to make New Year Resolutions this year. Instead, like last year, I am setting goals. I've found that goals create journeys to the destination of the goal. It's how I became a Certified Professional Photographer last year and it's how I created my first charity calendar. The journey was definately worth the destination

One of this years goals is to take a non client picture every day. Something for me, something not necessarily related to family (not birthdays, etc where the camera is anyway.) I haven't given much thought to what the picture will be, if I will follow a theme (sunsets) or set a goal for the week (perspectives, colors etc) or just see what the day brings. I kind of like the idea of seeing what today brings since today was definately a lay low day for my family. But I kind of see lots of sunset pictures being posted through the year. Hmmm, but even setting a goal for the week makes me look at the world around me differently. We'll see where it takes me.

Today, I have a sunset. I was sitting at my kitchen table about 5:30 and seeing some lovely warm glows come through my little, only window in the kitchen over the sink. Grabbed my camera and headed out to find the card full! (ok, I borrowed my daughters camera). So I did the unthinkable and deleted an images, metered, composed and shot. When I turned around to come back in, I saw my Charlie Brown Christmas tree that I thought had possiblitlies, so deleted another image, metered composed and shot. So to jump start my picture a day, I have two!

Can I buy a cd with a copyright release?

I get asked this quite frequently and the answer is both yes and no. First, understand, it is an insult to me as a professional photogrpaher...ie...artist if I will release the copyright. Would you go to Tommy Hilfeger and ask if he'd give you the rights to make his clothing anywhere you wanted? Would he say yes? Louise Vuitton? Norman Rockwell? Claude Monet?

Ok, I realize some of these artists are no longer living, but, they made a LIVING off their creations. They held the right to "manufacture" it in the best possible light. When you take a cd of the portrait I created for you to Walmart, Target, or where ever, you ARE NOT getting the best possible portrait. And I do not want my name attached to that. You just took food from my children, money for my mortgage (and I live in a little 1400 ranch-style home with 5 other people) rent for the building. and on and on. Did you think of that?

Being a photographer is NOT my hobby. This is my job. Please, please, please, before you ask for a cd of pictures to print on your own, think about what you really want. It's a LOT cheaper to take the pictures yourself. You want cheap, you can do as good if not better job doing it yourself than hiring a photographer who sells the cd.

Now, having said that. I do have a high resolution cd available for purchase. It starts at $1200 with a collection, it does not include a copyright realese unless you take over my mortgage payments for a year. The $1200 will give you reproduction rights and a high quality file that will print very nicely at the labs I RECOMMEND.

I understand their are people who sincerely want an archive of the portraits they have invested in. They know if something bad happens, they can have those memories reprinted (but I recommend to them to come back to me for the best quality). They aren't out to get a good deal or cheapy pictures. And for them, I will cater. For the rest, I'm not the photographer for you....

Changes, Changing, Changed...it's time.

As I sit at my computer on a warm Sunday afternoon, browsing through my fave edition of Professional Photographer Mag and the newest edition sitting next to me, I know what has to happen. And it's scary! It's time to take the last 5 1/2 years and re-evaluate. It's time for change. Seeing everything that is happening to, around and in the photo industry, I know to survive, I have to start changing. By the time this post is found by many of my clients, past, current and future, we will have changed.

It's time to look away from the major appearance of sooo many new photographers who have decided that taking a pretty picture is enough to make a living and open a studio. It's time to start looking at who I want to follow and where I want to be. It's time to be the portrait art studio I have dreamed of being for the last 20 years, no more excuses. If it's important enough to dream, it's important enough to do.

I won't bore you with the changes that are and will be taking place, but I will tell you, if you are looking for someone to take your picture, I'm not the photogrpaher for you. If you are looking for someone to create fine wall art for your home, we should chat. If you want the very best experience, the finest quality fine art heirloom keepsakes, and you're own personal portrait artist for life, look no farther.

Certified Professional Photographer

One of my goals for 2010 was to become a Certified Professional Photographer, CPP. Less than 5% of the photographers in the world are certified with fewer than 50 certified in Ohio. The certification process is two part the first being image review, the second a written exam. Last month I submitted the 20 required images for the image review. The review is based on showing that the photographer understands the technical aspects of photography through proper lighting techniques, posing and composition.

I am excited to announce that I received my letter of congratulations that I passed the image review!

I will be taking the written exam in September.

Will Your Grandchildren Be Very Upset With You?

I’m willing to bet your grandchildren will be upset with you. Here’s why. Imagine, 50 years from now, as your grandchildren or great grandchildren are going through the boxes in the attic. They are enthralled with the treasures and keepsakes they find and how they tie into the story of your life.

Amongst all the old items, they find a number of round silver objects. Some have writing on them, some are blank, but they resemble some kind of a small platter about 4″ across, with a hole in the middle.

Puzzled, they take them to their parents. “What are these, Mom?” they ask. “Oh, I think those are all of grandma’s photographs. Yep, here’s one labeled ‘My Wedding’. Here’s some more labeled ‘Family Photos,’ and some more labeled ‘Vacations’.”

“How do we look at them?” they ask.

“Well, I’m not sure we can. First of all, no one has the device that reads these anymore. Besides that, I doubt after all these years that they’re any good anymore. Being stored in the attic, the heat and cold probably ruined them.”

The kids are very disappointed. Nowhere amongst all the treasures are any actual prints. All that history is lost. Their connection with the past and all the wonderful stories that might have gone along with all those photographs are gone as well.

Along with all the wonders of our digital age come some significant problems that most people have never thought of.

Did you know that over 90% of all images taken on today’s digital cameras are NEVER PRINTED? I’m guilty of that myself. I have gigabytes of personal photographs that have never been seen other than on a computer screen.

In the old days, film went to the lab and everything that was printable was printed. Even if it was a bad photograph, it still was a hard copy, a part of your family history and it had permanence. Even if they never went in an album, they at least went into a box, to be discovered as treasures years later.

The same problem exists in professional portrait studios today. Many people are simply asking for the images on CD. “I’ll print them later” or “I’ll design my own wedding album” are common phrases. Usually this is done with the thought that they’ll save some money by doing it themselves.

But you know what? Most never make it into any kind of an album. Life gets busy and 20 years later they’ll be looking for some way to read those disks.

I bring this up only to point out the importance of what we, as a professional studio do. Our job is not just to create the images, to create wonderful story telling photographs about the people in front of our camera; it’s to create a final product, whether it be a professionally retouched and printed portrait, a family heirloom wall portrait, or an incredible storybook album using a collection of the portraits.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a wedding, a newborn baby, a senior or a family. Having the final portrait created for you is important. To do less is to leave the job unfinished and to short change the customer.

So, if you’re asked for a disk with all the images “so I can print them later”, that’s fine, just make sure your customers understand that if not printed, the conversation their grandchildren will want to have about their family history may never be able to happen.

2. pleasant but tinged with sadness. "The Free Dictionary"

I really had to search for the definition of that word. It's appearently a color, a plant and now a music group. But for me it describes what's happening right now.

The Class of 2010 is getting ready to graduate. One of them will be my son. My oldest. No, I can't believe he's that old aleady, just as I'm sure you are feeling the same about your child.

But this isn't about my son as amazing as he is! It's about your child and a huge THANK YOU!

Even though I have been taking pictures for over 15 years and have had my own business over 5 years, the last 8 months have been different. Last fall when I moved from my home into a "brick and mortar" building, it changed everything! It became a brand new business, building from the bottom, up and doing it all from scratch. What is so amazing about this was the parents who shared their awesome children with me! The 12 families who wanted a "Once in a lifetime" senior portrait experience for their children. Now 12 seniors may not seem like many, but for a "new" business "just starting out" and only 8 months, that's a pretty big deal. And I have to say Thank You for the wonderful opportunity to get to know their children. I will be crying right along with you as they walk up to get their diploma's!

I had been thinking about this all weekend. It was prom weekend for my son, he forgot to take his picture paper and missed out on formals at the dance. I had taken a few at home, the usual mom with a camera shots. Going on Facebook, I got to share pictures of other families, some of them "my" seniors. The ones who graced my camera room this year and it was so exciting to see them dressed up for the evening!

But the highlight came last night when I got a picture text from one of my senior moms sharing with me her beautiful daughter dressed up in her prom dress! That did it! What an awesome experience I've had this year!

How can I help make this special for the class of 2011? From the moment they walk into the studio for their senior portraits till the night their date ackwordly pins on the buttonaire or fumbles with a wrist corsage?

Anyone can take your child's senior portraits. You can take your child's senior portriats. But experience has taught me, they are more comfortable with someone experineced in the emotion of "them". And mom or dad probably isn't that person...your just too close to them. They need someone who just knows the technical side of the art so that the emotional side just slips on through to each pose. Someone who does not need 4 hours to get 75-100 shots that just plain overwhelm and deaden the experience. Someone who does not need to fix it in photoshop so three weeks later you can see a lot of porcelin doll faces that just aren't your child. Let me create the story that unfolds the beginning of the "once in a lifetime" year. You invested in them for 17 or 18 years, why settle when it comes to a keepsake that you will cherish long after the cap and gown are put away.

The cost of professional.

It's a rant day today. The disclaimer, I am in business to MAKE money. My kids need to eat, they have teeth, eyes and occaisonally get sick which require denist, eye doctor and medicial doctor. Becuase they eat, they grow out of their clothes. Like you own children, mine like to get gifts on their birthdays and holidays. They prefer a house over living in a car or cardboard box. They attend school that requires we pay school fees and like your child they like to go on field trips. They prefer being warm in the winter so we pay our DP&L bill and propane bill. We have a mortgage, insurance, buy gas for our cars and ALL those expenses that you pay for from that check you get every week or so from your employeer. The difference, I am my employeer. Hence, this is my JOB.

I'm in a very expensive business, my accountant pointed that out Wednesday night. I already knew that.

There are a LOT of photographers to choose from out there today. There are a lot of electricians, plumbers, hairdressers, bakers, on and on and on. A LOT of them are CHEAP! But is cheap worth it? You know that old adage, you get what you pay for. Think Walmart here.

But, this is about my business, my industry, Professional Portrait Photographer.

I'm not cheap. I'm not the most expensive either. And believe me, there are A LOT cheaper out there. And some of them are pretty darn good, others, well, what were they thinking? Interested in cheap? I can give you a list, I don't recommend them, but I can give you a list.

But, this isn't to blast other photographers. This is to explain in some detail why hiring a professional portrait photographer is going to be an investment. See disclaimer at the top.

Equipment. Obviously I can't take the first picture without a camera. Yep, I take beautiful images from any camera. My personal choice for capturing yours is a pro camera? Why, I like really big wall portriats. 16x20 and bigger. My camera lets this happen with NO photoshop help.
Lights, I can do natural light, but I'm trained in studio, and I don't have a natural light studio yet, so I use strobes, they didn't come from camera's r us.
Lightmeter, what the heck is that? THAT is how I nail that image in camera and not fix it in photoshop. It's the second most important piece of equipment I own. Camera being first.
Third most important? My MAC becuase I swithched from film 5 years ago. Sure I can use any old computer and if I were printing at Walmart, any old camera and computer would work. Lucky for you, I care about you more that that. I use a pro lab.
I have more equipment, it would blow most people's mind. Glad my hairdress knows how to use her sissors and clippers. The alternative scares me.
But professional equipment is NOT a requirement to be a professional photographer. Acutually, there is no requirement.

You are required in the state of Ohio to pay sales tax on ANYTHING you sell. That means you have to have a vendors license.
Equipment insurance.
Liability insurance.
I pay rent, I personally don't want people I don't know yet in my children's home.
Electric
Propane, unless you LIKE seeing your breath when I do a boudior and I'm sure that naked newborn is 100x's happier in a warm studio.
professional memberships like PPA for indemnity insurance and training
software like photoshop
batteries, cf cards, processing, frames, accountant, printer, ink, paper, stamps, website.
And don't forget assistants. Even part time assistants.

Want to add this up? I know I missed lots of stuff. Oh yea, since I own my business, I'm responsible for my income tax and thanks to recent changes, I can't hire an employee without having HEALTH insurance.

What do you make a year? Like this or would you like to make less? Like working 40 hours a week, or do you want to work more so you don't have to go see you child star in the school musical? See the disclaimer at the top.

Why do professional photographers charge so much? Because it's expensive to own a business and make a living. AND you get what you pay for.

Sure, I can do it cheaper. Can you add my children to your insurance and feed them for me? They would also like to take a family vacation, all there friends take them. Trust me, that "cheap" photogrpaher you went to, has a full time job where someone else rights the check, or they don't feed their kids. Just saying.

It's my day off, it's dreary, gray, raining, cold. It's Monday.

So why am I on here blogging? Because it's MONDAY!!! The beginning of a new work week and a super busy family week. Sunday is refresh, recharge and rejoice. Monday is kick start the week.

I'm kick starting! I have some adorable little girl girlie girl hair accessories heading my way...and you're daughter can have them for herself. How? Glad you asked. I need a couple littl girls (3 to 4 years old) to model the pieces for me. The hair accessories are then available for them at a special discount (trust me mom, you'll love the discount).

YES! Please call for your child's appointment time.

All children who are photographed at a model search and have donated the minimum $25 session fee toward the fundraiser, will be considered for the calendar.

How will that work? In June, ONE pose from EACH child's session will be placed online for voting. Each vote is $1 and ANYONE can vote! The most votes will be the cover and inside. The other 11 winners will be featured on a month.

So far I have a $300 prize basket for the child who's image collects the most votes.

Hey, a new post! {portrait photographer}

I've had so many things going on lately, I've neglected this blog! The kids second winter break really put things behind, but I am working daily to catch up (will that ever happen?)

I am still looking for 2011 Spirit Seniors. This is a senior who represents the studio at their school. There are purks and fun to go with this! Seriously, why would you want anyone else to do your senior pictures anyway!

I have fallen in love with newborns. This is my other area of focus right now. Know anyone who is expecting? Send them to the studio, I will create some of the most beautiful, unique, enchanting newborn images available in Miami County! And really, why would you trust those first images to anyone else!

Wings of Love, I just can't leave that out! This is the studio's first big fundraiser. I have a goal, and I'm going to share it here...my goal is for this calandar to raise $3000. That would make my heart soar for that goal to be reached! If you don't know about this yet, you need to go to Wings of Love or Facebook. Either place will give you information. And as always, you can call the studio!

On that last note. Right now the best way to reach me is going to be by phone. Seriously, if you are emailing me, I'm probably not getting it. Some hosting changes, some url changes and some server changes have left me with a NEW EMAIL. So calling the studio gurantees I have you on my voicemail if you don't catch me during studio hours. (and yep, with a four kids, I stick to those hours!)

New Year challenge...

Happy New Year! IT's that time of the year we get a fresh start, start over, make new goals, new promises, set new challenges! Of course we can do this anytime, but January 1st just seems to be a fresh start for everyone.

I've been on break with my kids. Since they go back tomorrow, that is when I start all my new goals. I don't set resolutions, I like goals better. But this year, I have decided to go ahead with a resolution. Last year was a rough year for my family. My dad was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. He's doing good now, but it was a life changing year for my family. I found myself on a very good path to get healthy. I was running and working out, watching what I eat and doing really well. Then about October I develoved a nice upper respiratory infection, common for me and accomponied by a cough that lasted till December. Out the door went the running and excersing. Of course just in time for the holidays and with all the goodies everywhere, I gained back all that weight. Dang!

So, I decided on a resolution to lose that weight. It felt wonderful running, I am not a runner and it was amazing that I was able to do week 5 of the couch 2 5k program. I could work out with "My personal trainer" on my wii and walk away pumped! I want that back! And I want to drop a couple dress sizes so I can get that "Little Black Dress" for my birthday this year. I have a feeling that this years forty something birthday is going to be rough, I want to look good if I have to add another year.

Well, the resolution has become a challenge. I want you to jump on board with me. You have to want to do this and it will be up to you to find the resources. (I'll post as I find resources that I feel are low cost and effective) But hopefully I can add a touch more motivation to the goal.

Holiday schedule

Thought I'd better get this up since Christmas is next FRIDAY! My kids being on break kind of triggered a reminder that the studio will close for the holidays so I can be spend time with my family and four children while they are on break. My son is a senior, and I have a feeling, he won't be hanging around mom next year during Christmas break.

The studio will have regular hours on Tuesday 10am to 5pm
Half a day on Wednesday 10am to 1pm.
Closed Christmas eve through Jan 4th.

Normal hours will resume January 5th, 2010!

Tuesday - Friday 10am to 5pm
Last Saturday of each month by appointment
Second Wednesday of each month, after hours by appointment.

I am a small business owner! I am self supporting!

KCook Photography is part of the backbone of Miami County. As an independant business owner, I am obligated to do "it" the right way. That means I pay my taxes, I don't sneak it under the table. I may not be the cheapest, but in the end you get what you pay for. I also stand behind my products. I make my living by doing one thing and doing it right. In the end, this is how I survive! By supporing business my like mine, you are supporting the community you live in. When you shop at independant locally owned business you are giving us the opportunity to give back too.

It's simple, instead of taking the $150 you may dump at the major retailer or someone who is "doing it on the side", spend $50 at 3 local independant business in Miami County (or the county you live) every month. Put the money back where you live. Keep us alive and putting food on the table for our families. The return for you will be a life long relationship with a local business that will cater to you!

I guarantee, if you get to know an independant business owner, you'll find someone who works harder than anyone else out there. We are the everything in our business. We are the marketing department, the sales dependant, the receptionist, payroll, shipping... And if it's a specialized business such as KCook Photography, there are hours and hours of training and education involved, not to mention the equipment used, that you just can't get from a "on the side" photographer.

Along with the caring committment to our customers and unique products you can not get any where else, you'll find independant business owners are over all less expensive in the end.

I challenge you to give the 3/50 project a try for 3 months. And if you feel the need to spend your money under the table, remember, you're only hurting yourself, the other person is just an insult to the business. (personally, I recommend Sear Portrait Studio if you find you can't save up for a professional photographer-but that's another entry)

Miami County Portrait Photographer {M.E. 6th Grade Football}

Last Saturday was 6th grade Parent Night at Miami East. I had the pleasure of being the fill in photographer for the evening's events. I'm going to be the first to admidt...I'm an awesome portrait photographer! Sports...not really my forte. And I can honestly say this with a smile. :) There are some great images from the night, but, in my perfectionism with my portraiture, I am just not comfortable selling them to the parents. Instead, along with my time for the evening, all the images are being donated. For me, just being asked to fill in, being given the opportunity to do something different, was enough.

To grab any faves from the night, you will need to copy and save the images to your computer. Some of you will know how to do this...from experience.
For all other...you will need to right click on the image and click on "save image as" From there save it to whereever you want on your computer.

Ohio Maternity Photographer {booking sessions}

I am putting a call out for expectant mama's. I will be expanding my portrait line to maternity portraits and newborn portraits. The creation fee is 1/2 off the regular session fee of $100 for the remainder of 2009. Newborn sessions are complimentary when Mom has had a maternity session at the studio and the newborn session is done before the baby is 2 weeks old. Sessions for either last about 2 hours and you will recieve a 5x7 keepsake portrait of your maternity session. All sessions are currently done in the studio.

Children's Photographer--Custom Photography Part 2

The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and ability to control various factors during the image taking and making process. Photographers, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur all benefit from this ability to manipulate pixels. However, with flexibility comes a price. Digital camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into creating a work of photographic art.

We all know that you can go to the local Walmart and pay a $1.99 for a print - as a client you may wonder why you may pay upwards of $50, $70, $90 for a custom photography print. Photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:
“How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at x store?”
The truth of the matter is the answer to this question is multifaceted. Much of the cost of a photographic print produced by a professional photographer has a lot to do with the time, equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer not to mention expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

The cost of TIME
Approaching it from a time standpoint, let’s imagine that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love. This photographer is traveling an hour to your destination to photograph your session. Here is an example of a time break down:

session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)

one hour travel time TO session,

15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home,

90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject,

one hour travel time FROM session,

30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer,

30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images,

2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images,

1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering,

2-3 hours time with client for ordering images,

1 hour sorting through and checking order,

30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery, any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering.

In this example, the time spent per client can range from just under 13 hours to 19 hours - dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to ONE session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot (aka SESSION FEE) you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session. The COSTS of Maintaining a Custom Photography Business:
Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run from $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.
Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussing other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip many of the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

What is it?

Custom photography ultimately is all about personal choice and experience. As in THE experience. You know, the EXPERIENCE that makes you feel like you are the only family in the photographer's world. The entire sessions is about creating a masterpiece keepsake that is unlike the next door neighbors. A wall portrait so beautiful, you want to show it with the world. It's about creating and capturing emotion. Custom photography is not about cheesy look at the camera and smile shots. It begins with a pre-session consultation to help you with clothing for your session and decorating your home with fine art wall portraits. It's the custom photographers understanding of light, pose and color to compliment your family. Custom photography is about finding someone who will photograph your family, give you devoted 1:1 attention without worry of the next ‘in line’ or the feeling of a crowded portrait studio. A custom photographer will typically show you a creative artistic gallery, culled to only show the good images that meet the photographers’ creative sensibilities. Often the images are fully edited images-color corrected with blemishes and undereye circles removed. The finished product is always a masterpiece created especially for you. A good custom photographer know patience that just isn't available that just isn't available through other studios.

Whether in the studio or on location, a custom photographer is going to capture the emotion of the session. Posed to look unposed through an understanding that only comes from experience or training or both. Using light to compliment both your family and the background whether natural or studio. A custom photographer is about you.

Custom photographers are also known as boutique studios, offering a range of products and unparalleled service. Think Lexus vs. Hyundai, think Nordstrom vs. WalMart.

Custom photography should have you, the client and your experience in mind.

I thought I'd take a little time to let everyone know a little about me and the studio. I have been in business 4 1/2 years now, but I have been taking portraits on a professional level for over 15 years. KCook Photography started out in the basement of my home. This summer, I found the perfect little country store to rent and turn into my new studio.

The studio specialized in Fine Art Photography. This is not your retail photography studio. Everything is custom to your needs and taste. That's why when you book your session, I like to do a pre-session consultation. Yes, it means driving to the studio (phone consults are available) but, I get to meet you, your family, children, get to know you and your taste. What you are really hoping to get from your session. What your budget is. Where you will be hanging your Wall Portrait. We talk about clothing options and choices. Backgrounds, sets and the best places for location portraits as well as the best time of the day. Custom portraiture is more than a keepsake it is a luxury and I make it worth every invested dollar.

I am a graduate of the Ohio Institute of Photography. My degree is in Portrait Photography, my specialty, children's portraits. That means I learned not only lighting but posing as well. I am a traditional photographer, but when the situation merits it, I can do contemporary too! My style is not look in the camera and cheese, instead it's an emotion. I am also a member in good standing with the Professional Photographers of America and was accepted into the Professional Photographers of Ohio earlier this year. Through our professional photographer network, we are helping breast cancer patients to celebrate life with charitable photography sessions. Individuals may choose to document their fight against the disease before or during treatment, or prefer to capture their victory by scheduling a session within 12 months after treatment is completed. If you missed the major announcement in my life...Where have you been!

Just kidding. Seriously, A week ago, I started the process of moving my home studio to a new building! The new studio will house the studio only. No more having to come into my home and go down those basement steps. I'm all one level now, wide open space, lots of light.

I started last week, painting. Keeping up on sessions, orders and kids put me a little behind, but we made up for that this weekend. I should be moving in, the end of this week.

The new studio features a country charm that will really enhance the whole experience of a session at KCook Photography. Really! I'm in the country, 6 miles from one fave senior location spot and 3 miles for a second. I can shoot outside the studio, I have an awesome front porch with white railing to shoot from. Easy access inside the studio. A bathroom that's on not shared by my family!

I have a front window for beautiful window light portraits, a fun barn siding wall painted Sweet Georgia Brown for some fun casual poses and a fireplace for some charming country Christmas Family Portraits. Can you visualize it?

Ok, so a picture is worth a thousand words and some Facebook friends have asked for pictures, so watch tomorrow's post for the inside of the main room. This will be my camera room and showroom. We're calling it the Main Room. It will have a homey country charm that I will fill with ideas for you to use in your home and as gifts (all available from your session). The pics tomorrow won't be the room finished, just a stepping stone to what it will become.

Until the end of July, I will still be taking sessions and appointments in my home studio. The first session in the new studio has already been booked, so if you'd rather have your session there, just let me know and we'll look at August and September.

Bridge over waterfall.

By a landslide. The bridge over the waterfall is the winning image for my office. I had originally planned on not having any other prints hanging in there, but since I am now offering frames...and not just offering, when your portrait leaves the studio with a frame, it has a lifetime guarantee with it...I will have a couple other portrait hanging also. But the Bridge over the waterfall will be printed this week!

My son is a senior!

It's official. I'm now the mom of a high school senior. I can really relate to all you mom's out there who are experiencing this for the first time. Does it get easier with the next? I have a feeling it's going to be harder since the next child is 7 years younger and my oldest daughter!

It hit me when the report card came. It's real, that and the graduation parties I'm attending for friends of graduating seniors. Where did the time go? What a year I will have a head of me. It's also becoming more and more real as I start senior pictures for other families. Oh, can I ever relate this year. I'm finding a lot of mom's really don't know what to do or expect going into this final year of high school. When I get a phone call now about senior portraits and a frazzled parent, I can honestly say, "I know what you're going through!" Fortunately, when it comes to the area of Senior portraits, I can be the calm voice of reassurance. While you're begging and pleading with your senior on the importance of senior portraits as a documetation of a milestone in their life, I am here to make at least that process simple and painless. And for the parents of boys, I can really relate! My son was given the choice, have mom do them or we will find a photographer mom is ok with and have them done elsewhere. My son chose me. He's not looking forward to them. He's not going to run out and pass them out to all his friends and he won't make a senior rep for the studio, but I know they will be good. A reflection of who he is.

So, as I move into my son's senior, last year of high school, remember, I can relate. We can celebrate together as our child moves onto the next phase of their life. I'll listen and share memories of their childhood as they move into adulthood. We can cry together as we think about all the time we feel we lost and how quickly the time went. But dream of the a wonderful life they will have and the joy they brought us as our babies and watching them grow up.

I think I'll go have a good cry now.

A cat's life

Not sure what to blog about today, so I'm going to blog about my 3 male cats. My other comic relief, the first being my kids. If you know anything about me, you know I love cats and always have. I can only remember a brief time as an adult when I didn't have a cat. It was rough. I like their "I don't have to like you" independence. They can totally ignore you and you still will go out of your way to get them come to you. My husband doesn't understand this. He'd rather kick them all out then put up with feline attitude. I think it takes a special person to love a cat.

I do have 3 males. Jake came from the Miami Co humane society. They told me he was 2 years old. Not so sure about that. We've had him 6 years. He would follow me everywhere during the day. Then at night I had to put him outside, before my husband got home, shhh, don't tell him. That lasted 3 days, the third night, Jake took off. I was devastated, after all, I waited 8 years to have a cat again. Jake was gone 24 hours then showed up again, guess he knew a good thing. From then on, Jake became my first housecat.

A couple years later, Callie showed up. Just showed up one morning. She was pregnant. Me being the cat person I am, let her in the house on cold days. I let her in the wrong day. She left me a really big problem in my daughters closet. 5 kittens were born that day. And if you think that was fun explaining to my husband, try explaining why the cat was in the house in the first place. But they stayed too...for a while.

I now have my 3 feline boys. Tommy, my baby. The last one born, he was the ugliest cat I'd ever seen. Orange and cross eyed. Not anymore! Nermal (the world's cutest kitten) and he lives up to the name. And of course Jake!

So, be prepared for cats when you visit me or have your session at my home studio. Jake likes to greet everyone and the studio is open territory!

My high school friends are just shaking their heads and saying, she really hasn't changed!

Feels like Monday

Starting the work week on a Tuesday really messes me up. I think all deadlines should be pushed back 2 days to make up for the one lost day. And for me, this week, it's should be 3 or 4 since I'll miss 1/2 of today and all day tomorrow. But, I know my customers are excited to see their previews and since I'm excited to show them, it will all fall into place.

Today will be my crazy day. I have doggie portraits to post. I cannot wait to share them. Last weeks glamour to finish up, those rock! And get ready for my senior sessions in June. Love the creativity and spontaneity of working with seniors! Then I take off early to take pick up my 3 daughters and meet my son at the surgeons. Hopefully we can put off the hernia surgery for a few more weeks since school is so close to being over. Three daughters, two ballgames and two different fields (St. Paris and Northwestern) will totally finish me off today. I'm secretly hoping for rain so the games are rescheduled and hopefully not on the same day!

Time to start my "Monday". Looking forward to Friday already!

S'mores

Memorial Day weekend, the first "official" holiday of summer. And yesterday was a perfect example of summer weather! We love bonfires, or at least I do. My kids are learning to love them, but I was raised spending my summer in a camper at the campgrounds. I really miss that! Nothing compares to sitting around a campfire, roasting hotdogs, making fruit pies and of course S'mores! Our version of the campfire is held at our firepit in our backyard. And the best part has to be when the fire is ready for cooking. Then just watching the sunset and the stars come out. I don't always love living out in the middle of nothing, but on a clear evening, it has it's advantages.

Even though last night wasn't our first bonfire of the year, it was the first that I remembered the marshmallows and chocolate. The ultimate s'more would be without the graham cracker, but I haven't figured out how to do that without a really sticky mess! I can still taste that perfectly roasted marshmallow, nice and brown on the outside, gooey warm on the inside. Squashed between those two graham crackers and a piece of Hershey's chocolate...yum! Second to a s'more has to be a hotdog roasted over the fire. Yes, I love hotdogs! You can say yuk, but I love them nicely tanned, not burned and having that outdoor cooked taste, and only a name brand hotdog will do. No bun necessary, but it helps soak up those baked beans!

So, on this first holiday of the summer, enjoy the food, family and friends and if you get a chance to make s'mores, enjoy there timeless messy tradition.

And also remember your friends and family who have gone before you and our service men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

I am two days behind on delivery. The pictures from the dance should have been delivered today, but my yongest has strep throat. I will be Wedndesday instead of today, Monday, before they are delivered.

I was introduced to this today on my facebook page. It's from the Project Triangle and Wikipedia is a good place to start to learn more about it.

To put it simply, it says:

* Design something quickly and cheaply, but it will not be of high quality.
* Design something with high quality and cheaply, but it will take a long time.

There are some wonderful small business out there that I would like to see frequented more often than the local Walmart. Yes, they may be more expensive, but the personal service and quality will more than make up for that! And yes! We do shop small business'. My Dad

If you follow me on facebook, you know my dad found out he had a tumor in his left lung about a month ago. I say had, becuase his surgery was last Monday and very successful. But a really rough week for him. He had heart problems on Thursday night and was sent from the base hospital to Miami Valley by Care flight ground. He spent about 2 days in the CUICU. I am happy to say, that today Easter Sunday, he is in a regular room. All his tubes from his lung surgery have been removed. No oxygen, which they though he'd come home with. He's on a heart monitor only. Were waiting for him to be released. I have to say, I believe in the power of prayer, I believe in guradian angels and I belive my otherwise healthy dad is one of the strongest people I know.

I had the honor of taking my parents pictures the winter of '97. Everytime I see the 8x10 of my dad sitting on their mantel I am so in awe of how good it is. That photographer did an awesome job. (or the camera takes really good pictures. ;))

If you're still blessed with your parents, drag, drive, pull them to the studio, any studio and have a session of just the two of them. Soon!

Well, it's Tues and I'm such a lame lame blogger. I didn't get my last session posted yet and they are too cute!

But I just have to give praise to my kids! My son is on target for an apprenticeship program at UVJVS next year. Graphic Arts. He's going to be one of those young guns who makes it big early in life.

Then to my daughters. They are once again on target for the honor roll, but it's my youngest who just amazes me. She is going to be that one kid in the class that totally messes up the curve for the rest of the class. You know the one who gets 108 out of 100 consistently? She's that one and only in 2nd grade.

Just had to share my joy in my children.

It's cold baby

Did I mention I hate the cold. I'm okay with snow within moderation. It's been well above moderation for me this year. It's only 28 deg right now and with the wind, I'm sure it's much colder. I'm not leaving the house today.

This is my last Saturday that I'm free for while. I think I'll do some cool pics of my kids, their school pics didn't get done last fall, oops. Starting next Sat, I have sessions and events booked for at a couple months. I am sooo excited about that. I can still book on some of those Saturdays, but I have at least 1 session or event per Saturday to look forward too.

Well, Thursday I did say there would be pics up from a recent session. I will get them up later today. I went to the Flower Factory yesterday to see what fun things I could add to the studio. First time there, I can't wait to go back! The only thing I didn't find was bottles of bubbles for senior girl session. Did I peak any curiosity? Want one of those sessions? Want it discounted? I have about 5 email accounts. I don't know why. Kind of an addiction I guess, like shoes. But too many shoes aren't a problem, too many email accounts have become a problem. Especially here recently. A classmate from my high school graduating class died (and understand, I know I should say passed away, but I explain that in a sec.) this week. Trying to keep up on viewing and funeral arrangements has been a problem because everyone has a different email address to send me updates.

So, to make it easy, if you are reading this, I check Kelly@cookphotography.biz every single day and usually more than twice. Anything sent to any other account will probably sit there a few days, or months or {sigh} a whole year. I know I should clean them up, but I have vendors that have to be transferred and it's just not something I've made the time for.

Real quick...I use died instead of the fancy lets hide the fact words that are supposed to make everyone feel better. Death is sad. It's final. I believe in God and heaven, it doesn't make death any less hard to deal with. When Jeff died, I was told I can call it what it is, don't make it pretty. My first husband died. Every funeral I go to, it all comes rushing back. It's hard. Time made it better. Jeff's death made me see how very precious life is. It's why I asked for OIPT instead of Sinclar Nursing School when I called information all those years ago. It's why I am who I am today and where I am today.

So, celebrate life today and always. We did it by laughing at Jeff's funeral. It's a nice memory, thanks guys for that.

Busy Day

Today is going to be a busy day. Of course it is, I'm fighting off a cold that is turning into a sinus infection. I will be so happy when the weather finally settles down and we don't have these swings between 30 and 50!

But busy is good. Means I won't be moving any furniture around (don't tell my chiropractor I do this) I have a children's session on location this morning. Then this afternoon a preview viewing of a pet session. Yep, I do cats and dogs, puppies and kitties. On location for now though. Uh oh, two posts in one day

Got to thinking. Not good, I know. If you're interested, I do have a studio stimulus plan in place. I've come up with creative ways to keep me busy and out of trouble (which mostly means re-arranging furniture in my home) and give you something entertaining to do. I'm fun to watch in the camera room. ;)- Plus, there's nothing in the world like a child in my studio!

#1 is those Children's sessions that are only donations in the form of food pantry donations or NILMDTS donation. See my previous blog post for more info.

#2 I still need about 5 more senior reps. How does that help you? Oh boy, if you have H.S. junior, you need me. I know first hand the expenses involved and mine is a boy, I can only imagine a girl! My studio reps are mostly and will probably all end up being girls, although guys are welcome. The session fee is deeply discounted and your soon to be senior gets all the new session ideas I am offering this year...first. They can earn gift cards and portraits and even some cash. You can encourage them (like I said, I have a junior too) to give out those biz cards so you can get lots and lots off their senior portraits and maybe even some free. I work, they work, you save.

#3. Families, I want to do some very classic family sessions. 25% off the session fee and if you love (and you will!) the portraits, you can purchase anything you want. But, you aren't obligated to! Again, I work, keeps me from moving around furniture and my husband from walking into a strange house, and you have the opportunity for that extra special family portrait that may only happen once every 5-10 years.

#4. I'm taking the plunge as a weddings photographer this year. An area I've pretty much not done much with. I have a background in wedding photography, just haven't put it to use. I think I'd love to do more weddings and I know you'd love my style. So for you Brides to be, 25% off my top two Wedding Coverage Collections. Plus, for a now, I am offering a formal Bridal session just for the Bride a few weeks before the wedding on every Wedding Collection. And for those Brides who really want something different, I'm open to giving away a few "Trash the Dress" sessions after the wedding reception!

#5. All good things come to an end and my Studio Stimulus Packages will also. March 31, these offers expire. I will probably have new ones, but they may not be as good! So, if you're like me and a procrastinator, probably not a good time to put this off if you are interested in any of these offers!

Ok, hopefully that is enough to get you to open the blog and read today's post. I need parents who would let me borrow their children to build my portfolio. Instead of a session fee, I am asking for donation to either the food pantry in St. Paris or a donation to Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. If you choose NILMDTS (which is what today's post was going to be about, so watch for tomorrow's) and would like your child entered in the organizations Model Search, the entry/session fee will be waived.

Even if you just had your child's portrait taken at your fave chain studio, consider a professional session with me. You are absolutely under no obligation to purchase anything. All I ask is to use the images in my website and portfolio as samples of my work. Since my time is usually compensated with the session fee, I am giving that up for the portfolio building by giving back. If you aren't familiar with my studio or work, I do give back a lot!

I can only offer this through March. In April, full session fees go back into place. Images I use for my portfolio will be available for purchase the rest of the year. But, any pose you love when you see the images, is also available for purchase. And I hold by my promise, you are under no obligation to purchase anything, I just need to build up my portfolio with the new ideas I have.

Pride

*Warning* Today is soap box day.

Pride is free as my husband likes to quote all the time. "Pride is a sin" Is another popular pride quote. My personal favorite, is "I take pride in my work" And yes, I do. By taking pride in my work, you are getting the best of me. Do you know why I don't show you every singe image I take? It's because not every single pose was flattering to you, maybe a wrong camera setting, funny expression, one hair out of place, clothing wasn't smoothed, flash didn't fire correctly, you blinked I moved, you moved. There may be 5 out of 25 I just don't think is flattering to the work I do or what I offer as a professional business woman and professional photographer. If you don't want the best most carefully thought out portraits of you, your children, your family, I'm definitely not the photographer for you.

Would you like to see your session posted on my blog? I'd love to post your session here and/or my website. But,I need you to call me when it's time to visit that chain store studio that spends 15 mins in the session (really, why? what does that accomplish?), doesn't retouch (they'll gladly add a fancy frame or make it unique by selective color, gee I can do that, you can do that!) and you see it immediately. Do you really want to see those pictures immediately or do you want to see some awesome retouch artistic work added that make those images works of art for your home? Hey, did you know, when that pride for what I do is factored in i.e. customer service, I'm actually a better deal than the chain store studios. It's called Custom Photography and you deserve it.

Since it's Monday, today's post is short and sweet. The Studio is closed on Monday's so I can do housework and stock the pantry. Plus daughter #2 is home sick.

What I love about Sundays...

And I do love that song. Sundays are my day off. Seriously off. I spend it doing a lot of nothing along with my family. We start the day with church. Today didn't go as planned. Daughter #1 woke me up at 2:30 with a belly ache. Daughter #2 decided to get sick at church instead of at home. So we made Sunday School, but missed church. I sing in the choir, which I absolutely love, but missed that too. Whatever was happening with the sick girls was gone by noon. We experienced this last Monday also. But daughter #2 and #3. Fortunately, they did not have school Monday and the studio is closed on Mondays.
Other than going to church and spending time with my family, the other think I love about Sundays is I get to take a nap! Today's was (I'm embarrased to say) 3 hours on the couch. I must have needed it!
I'll also make a nice big family dinner today. Something I don't usually have time to do during the week with 4 kids. Today will be Pork chops, mashed potatoes, veggies and pie. Yum. Also means I have to work out tomorrow.
Well, that's it for today's ramblings. Sunday are just made for that. And naps!

Welcome to my new blog

Yes, it's new. Not just the background, but it's a whole new blog! The old blog is still available and there is only a small change in name the two. I decided to take blogging in more of the direction it started out to be. Journaling! The link to the old blog is still availble to the side, but I will try to get the most of the info moved asap.

So, hopefully, you'll follow me on my new journey in blogging. This is still the Studio blog, but I will be taking a more personal approach to it. Keep checking back and I hope you enjoy my random ramblings as I blog.
